Key takeaways

  • The dental insurance company doesn’t cover the dental treatments during the waiting period.  Good dental insurance policies don’t have a waiting period.
  • Dental insurance doesn’t cover known or existing dental diseases.
  • Every dental insurance policy has a reimbursement limit period of 3 to 5 years. During this period, the insurer reimburses only a fixed amount agreed while signing the contract.
  • The dental policy costs increase as you age.

This is how you do it

  • Consider getting dental insurance when you turn 35
  • Consider the dental services and costs when getting a dental insurance policy. You should also check the cost over a long period. It’s because some plans might be cheaper now but can get expensive over time.
  • If you prefer customer service in English, check the dental insurance plans from Feather* and Getsafe*.
  • If you are okay with German, check the dental insurance policies of Deutsche Familienverschierung*, Allianz, Württembergische, and Barmenia.

What is a dental insurance waiting period?

The waiting period is the time during which the dental insurance provider doesn’t cover the dental treatment costs.

The waiting period starts after you sign the contract. It can last from 3 to 6 months, depending on your contract.

However, good dental insurance policies don’t have a waiting period. They have the reimbursement limits instead.

What is the dental reimbursement limit in Germany?

The dental reimbursement limit is the maximum amount your dental insurance policy will cover in the initial years after signing the contract.

Suppose you find out that you need an implant, and it will cost you around 1700 €. You thought, why not quickly take dental insurance to cover these costs?

However, dental insurance doesn’t work like this. If they did, they would be out of business or charge high premiums.

This is why dental insurance contracts don’t cover existing or known dental problems and have a reimbursement limit for a certain period.

The reimbursement limit lasts 3 to 4 years, depending on your policy. Here is the reimbursement limit for the dental insurance plans we suggested.

Suppose you get a dental implant in the first insurance year that costs 1700 €. In this case, Deutsche Familienversicherung will reimburse only 1000 €.

The dental insurance providers recommended by us waive the reimbursement limits if you need treatment because of an accident. There are also no reimbursement limits on preventive dental care, such as professional cleanings.

Dental insurance companies also don’t cover existing or known dental diseases.

Does supplementary dental insurance pay immediately?

The dental insurance company doesn’t cover known or existing dental problems. If your dentist has already told you about the treatment, you can no longer insure it.

The same applies if treatment is ongoing.

When you submit an invoice to the dental insurance company, they check your patient file. The insurer checks when the dentist recommends the treatment.

The insurer wouldn’t cover the costs if the dentist recommended the treatment before you took dental insurance.

Does dental insurance premium increase with age?

Yes, most dental insurance plans have staggered premiums. This means your insurance premium increases as you enter the next age block.

Here is how the dental insurance cost of our recommended dental insurance providers increases with age.
