Beitragsnachforderungen

Beitragsnachforderungen are demands for unpaid or retroactive contributions. You get a bill asking you to pay past fees that the payer says you owed. You may see this for health insurance, pension, or the public broadcasting fee.

A Beitragsnachforderung means the agency found missing payments for a past period. It matters because you may owe a larger sum, and interest or fees can be added. Always check the calculation, the period covered, and why it was missed. You can usually ask for a written explanation, file an objection (Widerspruch), or request payment in instalments.

You may see Beitragsnachforderungen if you changed address, stopped working, left Germany, or missed registration deadlines. For example, the Rundfunkbeitrag office can demand back payment if you were registered at an address but did not pay. A health insurer can request unpaid contributions if your insurance status was unclear.

Examples:

  • You move into an apartment and later receive a Beitragsnachforderung from the Beitragsservice for months you lived there but did not register.
  • Your Krankenkasse sends a Beitragsnachforderung after it is discovered you were not correctly listed as student and contributions for several months are due.
