Key Takeaways
- Erfurt is the happiest city in Germany among the 40 largest cities. Cheap rents, a clean environment, and fewer people living alone help Erfurt’s residents rate their life satisfaction at 7.74 out of 10.
- Eastern German cities score lower on life satisfaction than western German cities. Older populations, more people living alone, and higher unemployment help explain the gap.
- Seven of the top 10 happiest cities in Germany are in North Rhine-Westphalia. Few people living alone and good housing help explain why.
- Wealth and good infrastructure alone don’t make a city’s residents happy. Affordable housing, safety, and a sense of community also shape how happy residents feel.

Residents rated their life satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 10. The Allensbach Institute surveyed 23,286 residents aged 16 to 84, and the results are weighted to represent each city.
The objective quality-of-life rank places each city among Germany’s 40 largest cities using 30 indicators across eight categories, including housing, crime, infrastructure, prosperity, health, and environmental quality.
The ranking covers only the 40 German cities with more than 200,000 residents. Germany officially counts every city with 100,000 or more residents as a large city, so not all of Germany’s large cities are included.
Hamburg and Münster have equal life satisfaction scores and share 10th place.
Germany’s happiest cities are not always the ones with the best salaries, housing, or hospitals. In a ranking of Germany’s 40 largest cities, residents rated their own life satisfaction.
Each of Germany’s 40 largest cities also received an objective quality-of-life rank based on measurable living conditions. The life satisfaction ranking and the quality-of-life ranking often point in different directions.
Erfurt Is the Happiest of Germany’s 40 Largest Cities Despite Average Living Conditions
Erfurt is the happiest city in Germany among the 40 largest cities. It rose from 6th place in 2025 to 1st place in 2026 in the life satisfaction ranking.
Fewer unhappy residents explain much of Erfurt’s climb in just one year. In 2026, only 2.8% rated their life satisfaction 4 out of 10 or lower. That share was 5.6% in 2025.
On average, Erfurt residents rated their life satisfaction at 7.74 out of 10. Yet the city ranks only 27th of 40 for quality of life.
Three weaknesses hold back Erfurt’s quality-of-life rank:
- Smaller homes
- Low home ownership
- Comparatively low household incomes
Despite these weaknesses, Erfurt residents still rate their lives highly. Erfurt’s high life satisfaction is even more unusual because the city is in eastern Germany.
Eastern German cities have an average life satisfaction score of 6.91. Western German cities average 7.07.
Many eastern German cities have older populations, more people living alone, and higher unemployment. These differences pull life satisfaction down.

By contrast, Erfurt has several everyday advantages instead of these typical eastern weaknesses:
- Cheap rents, so housing takes a smaller share of people’s income
- A clean, high-quality environment
- Low unemployment
- The smallest share of people living alone among eastern German cities
- One of the lowest numbers of people receiving social assistance in Germany
Everyday advantages don’t fully explain why Erfurt residents are happier than its 27th-place quality-of-life rank suggests. A strong sense of community and attachment to the city also play a big role.
A High Quality of Life Doesn’t Guarantee a Spot Among Germany’s Happiest Cities
A city’s quality-of-life rank often says little about how happy its residents feel. North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and southern Germany show this mismatch from opposite sides.
Seven NRW cities rank in the top 10 for life satisfaction. Duisburg, Krefeld, and Oberhausen are among them, even though all three rank 35th or lower for quality of life.
Two everyday factors help explain why these NRW cities rank higher for life satisfaction than for quality of life.
The first reason is household life. Krefeld and Duisburg both have few people living alone, and living with a partner or family tends to raise life satisfaction.
The second reason is housing. Krefeld has more homeowners and more living space per person than the average of the 40 largest German cities. Duisburg’s low rents also make everyday life easier.
By contrast, southern German cities have high prosperity and strong infrastructure. Yet as a group, they score below the average of the 40 largest German cities for life satisfaction.
How Does Germany Rank for Prosperity in the EU? ->
Four everyday problems pull life satisfaction down in several wealthy southern German cities:
- High living costs
- Poor housing
- Many people living alone
- Fast-ageing populations

However, Augsburg is the only southern German city in the top 10 for life satisfaction. It ranks 11th for quality of life but 2nd for life satisfaction.
Safety and home ownership are the main reasons for Augsburg’s high life satisfaction. Only 2.2% of Augsburg residents say they are unhappy with their lives. That is the lowest share among the 40 largest German cities.
Beyond these city patterns, the overall trend across Germany’s 40 largest cities is positive. Average life satisfaction rose from 6.97 in 2025 to 7.02 in 2026. Most of the rise came from fewer very unhappy residents.
For anyone choosing a city in Germany, income levels and infrastructure are only a starting point. Housing costs, safety, and who you live with matter too.
