These five leagues are widely regarded as Europe’s wealthiest and most competitive.

Czech Republic shows this most clearly. Its squad carried the lowest value among the 10 EU teams. That value was €188 million. Only 7 of its 26 players play for a big-five club. Most of the squad plays in the domestic Czech league instead. 9 of those players come from Slavia Prague alone.

Being at a big-five club does not require playing abroad. Only France, Spain, and Germany have a big-five league of their own among the 10 teams in this field. Italy has one too, Serie A. Italy did not qualify for the tournament. Each of the three does something different with its own league:

• France: 16 of 24 big-five players play abroad, mostly in England’s Premier League
• Spain: 17 of 26 stay home in La Liga, including 9 at Barcelona alone

Germany and the Netherlands carried two of the six highest-valued squads in the world and still went out in the first knockout round. France fielded the tournament’s single most valuable squad.
