Here are some special features that set these tax apps apart.
WISO Steuer
- Includes AI support (Steuer-GPT) that answers tax-related questions anytime. The AI is good enough to answer most of your questions meaningfully.
- Offers a “pay once, use everything” service. This means your tax return is synced across all your devices, including desktop software, a cloud app, and a smartphone.
- You can hire a tax advisor via WISO Steuer who will check your completed tax return. You pay at least 119€ per review.
- You can upload all your receipts and save them in WISO Steuer. This way, you can forward the receipts to the tax office if required.
- WISO Steuer automatically reads and categorizes the uploaded documents. It also automatically inserts the data from the uploaded documents into your tax return. However, you must verify the correctness of the data before submitting the tax return.
There are two limitations you must know.
- There is feature parity between the WISO Steuer desktop and the smartphone app. For example, you can only file a VAT return via the desktop app.
- WISO Steuer is available only in German.
Overall, we find WISO Steuer* the best tax software in Germany as it covers all the possible use cases. So, if your life situation changes in the future (e.g., you start a side hustle, start earning rental income, etc.), you can continue using WISO Steuer.
Check24 Tax
- Has AI support (KI TaxGPT) to help answer tax questions.
- Offers a photo upload function for easier document submission.
- Completely free to use.
Unfortunately, Check24 Tax is available only in German.

If you are looking for tax software with an English interface, here are the best options in Germany.
NOTE: TaxFix and SteuerBot don’t support tax declarations for freelancers and self-employed.

We recommend WISO Steuer* for self-employed individuals. It covers the use cases of all legal forms in Germany (from freelancers to GmbH).
If you are a freelancer (legal form) and prefer English interface, you can use
Who is required to file a tax return in Germany?
Self-employed and farmers must always file a tax return.
Employees and civil servants must file an income tax return in the following situations (According to §46 EStG).
- You have income on which you didn’t pay income tax, such as rental income.
- You received wage replacement benefits, such as unemployment, short-time work, sickness benefits, maternity, insolvency, or parental allowance of more than 410€ (as of 2025). This also applies to top-up contributions for partial retirement.
- You work multiple jobs or receive multiple wages at the same time.
- You have the tax class combination 3/5 or 4/4 with a factor.
- You have claimed allowances for income tax deductions from the tax office, and you received more than 12,870€ as a single person in 2024 and 24,510€ as a married couple filing jointly.
- Your income tax certificate (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung) is marked with the letter “S.” This may happen in the following situation: You changed jobs within a year and received special payments such as a Christmas bonus. In this case, it’s possible that your new employer didn’t consider your previous employer’s contributions when calculating your income tax. This is rare, but you should check your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung to confirm.
- You have received a severance payment, and the favorable fifths rule (Fünftelregelung) was applied when calculating the income tax.
- Your partner died or you got a divorce, and you or your ex remarried in the same year.
- Your spouse is on the tax card and lives in another EU country.
- Your current residence is outside Germany, and you have applied for unlimited tax liability in Germany.
- You have claimed a loss carryforward.
Note: You must file an income tax return if the tax office requests it even if none of the above-mentioned requirements apply to you.
Even if filing a tax return is not mandatory for you, we still recommend doing so. According to Destatis, the tax office issued an average tax refund of 1,063 € for the 2020 tax year.

How can you file your tax return in Germany?
There are several ways to file your tax return in Germany:
Manual: Submit your tax forms via post or in person at your local Finanzamt. You can find the official documents online or at the tax office.
NOTE: You can file the tax return manually only if you don’t fall under the legal obligation to transfer data electronically. [1]
Electronically via ELSTER: This is the official online portal of the German tax office. It allows you to file tax returns digitally, free of charge. However, ELSTER is better suited to experienced taxpayers. It doesn’t offer enough guidance on technical or complex tax matters.
- Via einfachELSTER: It is a simplified version of the original Elster app. Only retirees and pensioners without additional income can use this app.
- Via Lohnsteuerverein: They are non-profit organizations. You can become a member. The membership fee includes filing of tax returns via a tax advisor. The membership fee depends on your income. They are usually cheaper than a business tax advisor.
- Via business tax advisor: They can prepare and submit your tax return on your behalf. This is ideal for complex tax situations (e.g., self-employed). However, it is typically the most expensive option.
- Through tax software or apps: Digital tools (e.g., WISO, Taxfix, SteuerGo) that make filing tax returns simpler with various features and customer support. This is a cost-effective option and easier to understand than ELSTER.

What should you consider when choosing tax software in Germany?
Here are the things you must consider when picking tax software.
- How much do you know about taxes? Not having much German tax knowledge means you need tax software with a good user interface and guided tax filing. If you have good tax knowledge, you can use Elster for free.
- Your income sources. Suppose you have multiple income sources, such as income from outside Germany, rental income, a side hustle, inheritance, etc. You should check whether the tax software offers features that cover all your income sources.
- Profession: Filing a tax return is more complex for the self-employed than for an employee. As a self-employed individual, you must create and submit VAT returns, EÜR, and other financial reports. Thus, ensure your tax software supports your profession. All tax software supports employees. However, they may not cover certain income sources, such as rental income.
- Language: Not all tax software offers an English interface.
- Pricing: All tax apps are priced similarly. Most tax apps also let you calculate your tax return for free, and will only ask you to pay upon submission. This is the case for all of our tested tax apps. However, there are apps like Check24 and Elster that let you use their services entirely for free. We also identified unique pricing schemes:
- Taxfix and Steuerbot offer a “Pay Later” option. This means that you pay only after you receive your tax assessment. However, this entails additional costs.
- Wiso Steuer offers a “pay once, use everything” option that allows you to sync your tax return across different devices via the cloud. For example, you can start filing your tax return on the mobile app and complete it via the installed application on your PC.
- Smartsteuer lets you file up to 5 tax returns per year without additional costs. This is suitable for individuals who are filing with their spouses or multiple family members.
- Usability: During our review, we found the tax assistance from WISO Steuer, Check24, and SmartSteuer to be the best. Tax assistance means the tax software asks you the right questions to make the best of your tax returns. You don’t need any prior tax knowledge. We also found the “search” functionality to be vital for complex tax returns. It can save you a lot of time and frustration. Not all tax software offers this feature. We also like SteuerBot’s user interface. You chat with a bot and complete your tax return. However, SteuerBot only supports simple cases.
- Document and invoice handling, such as automatic retrieval of past data or invoice organization. This saves time and reduces manual entry.
- Tax assessment report: Choose a tax app that checks your tax assessment report and helps you file objections, if any.
What are the advantages of using tax software in Germany?
Using tax software makes filing your German tax return much easier. Its key advantages include
- Wide range of features: Essential tools are in one place, from data import and invoice management to automatic calculations.
- Saves time: You can fill out most of the tax return in just a few clicks using pre-filled tax returns (VaSt). You can also check your tax assessment report (Steuerbescheid) and file objections directly in the tax software.
- Reduces errors: Built-in smart checks detect inconsistencies and calculation mistakes before tax return submission.
- Guided process: Clear instructions, built-in chat support, and other user-friendly tools make filing easy, even without prior tax knowledge.
- Cost-efficient: Using tax software is typically much cheaper than hiring a tax advisor.
- Multi-platform access: Most programs are available via desktop, web browser, or mobile app. Good tax software syncs your tax return data across these platforms, allowing you to file your taxes anytime, anywhere.
What does “pre-filled tax return” mean?
A “pre-filled tax return” feature allows you to import previously reported data into your tax return. It is also called VaSt. In Elster, it is called “Abruf von Bescheinigungen“.
Pre-filled tax returns include:
- Personal data (e.g., address, date of birth)
- Information reported by your employer
- Salary
- Income tax paid to the tax office
- Solidarity surcharge
- Withheld church tax
- Social security contributions
- Pensions
- Unemployment benefits
A “pre-filled tax return” feature helps you complete most of the tax return application. However, you still need to add your work-related and extraordinary expenses to reduce the tax burden.
What expenses can you deduct to save taxes in Germany? ->
What is the electronic tax assessment (Steuerbescheid)?
Tax software & Elster not only help you file the tax return electronically. You can now also get the tax assessment report from the tax office electronically.
The tax office sends you the tax assessment report (Steuerbescheid) after evaluating your tax return. This report contains the expenses the tax office considered, how much tax you owe or will get back, etc.
It’s recommended that you check your tax assessment report to ensure the tax office has considered all your expenses. Tax software like WISO Steuer* offers a feature to check your tax assessment report for any errors.
Suppose you find an error in your tax assessment report. In this case, you can submit an objection via the tax software directly.
If the tax office requires any proof, you can send it digitally via the tax software or NachDigal (Nachreichung digitaler Unterlagen). NachDigal is a new feature in ELSTER that lets you share documents digitally with the tax office.
How can you save on tax software in Germany?
Here are some ways you can save when buying tax software.
- Special offers: Sometimes, tax app providers offer discounts to attract new customers. Google if such discounts are available.
- Free Trials: Most programs let you fill out your return for free and only charge when you submit it. This way, you can test the tool and check your potential refund first.
- Annual subscriptions: Many providers offer annual subscriptions at lower rates. Try a few apps first, then subscribe only once you’ve found the right fit.
- Retail versions: Toward the end of the year, supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl often sell rebranded, simplified versions of popular tax programs at a lower price. You should check if they fulfill your tax needs.
