Germany is reintroducing the EV vehicle subsidy, offering up to €6,000 for households with income-based tiers. It is a retroactive subsidy, meaning consumers buying an electric vehicle from January 2026 will be eligible to apply.
Subsidy on buying and leasing new cars
You can get the subsidy on both the purchase and leasing of new cars. The government aims to support families with children and low-income families.
The subsidy will make EVs available to a broader range of people. The government is predicting that the program will benefit around 800,000 vehicles by 2029. The online application portal will go live in May 2026.
Which Are Subsidy-Eligible Cars?
The scheme covers electric vehicles, whether bought or leased. The price of the vehicle does not matter. The type of drive system is what matters most. Here is a list of eligible vehicles:
- Pure electric vehicles or BEVs.
- Specific plug-in hybrids
- Electric cars with range extenders
For plug-in hybrids, additional conditions must be met. The car must emit no more than 60 g CO2/km or be able to travel 80 km on electric power. The vehicles that are electric in paper but mostly rely on a combustion engine are not eligible for the subsidy program.
What Is The Amount Of Subsidy For EVs?
The subsidy begins with a basic amount. The minimum amount the buyers receive is based on the type of vehicle:
- Purely electric cars get a basic amount of €3,000.
- Plug-in hybrids and cars with range extenders get €1500.
Additional bonus amounts are determined by annual income and family size. In this case, the subsidy is more personalized than in the previous program.
Which Households Are Eligible and Gets How Much?
Private households can apply for a subsidy when buying or renting a new electric vehicle based on the type of drive. Here is the subsidy guide for purchasing a pure battery-electric vehicle.
| Taxable Annual Household Income | No Children | One child | Two or more children |
| 85,001 to 90,000 euros | Not eligible | Not eligible | 4000 euros |

What are the additional rules?
Here are a few other rules you need to meet before you apply for the scheme.
- All the vehicles that have been newly registered since 1st January 2026 are eligible.
- If you were waiting, you can proceed as the incentive will be applied retroactively from 1st January 2026.
- The tax assessments of 2023 and 2024 are essential as proof of income for the income thresholds.
- Irrespective of the drive type, there is a minimum 36-month holding period from the date of registration.
Where can you find the taxable income?
You can find your taxable income on Page 3 of the tax assessment. For subsidy eligibility, the two most recent tax assessment records are essential. For example, if you are applying for the subsidy in 2026, the tax assessment should cover 2023 and 2024.
If you and your partner are living in the same household, whether married or in a cohabiting relationship, both of your incomes can be clubbed together. The tax assessment for the two recent years can be calculated.
What are concern for car owners?
Concerns are lying in the retroactive draft plan. The vehicles registered from 1 January 2026 will be subsidized. However, you will have to pre-finance the car and wait for the grant.
This can create cash flow and legal certainty risks for you (the buyer) and the dealers. Just so you know, online applications will only start from May 2026.
