Germany’s 86,000 sports clubs logged 29.3 million total memberships as of January 2025. That is the highest figure since German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) records began in 1954.

Football counts 8,005,050 club memberships in Germany. It ranks first among the country’s 69 national sports federations.

These memberships come from local clubs organized under national sports federations, not a general population survey.

Each federation groups every club in one sport nationwide. The Deutscher Fußball-Bund does this for football, for example. 

Football’s lead traces partly to how quickly the sport organized. The DFB united 86 clubs from across the country when it formed in 1900.

Football also crossed German class lines faster than most sports. Industrial towns like Gelsenkirchen embraced it just as fast as the middle class did.

Gymnastics Ranks Second Because of a 200-Year-Old Movement

The German Gymnastics Federation ranks second among Germany’s sports federations. It counts 5,278,683 club memberships.

That size has more to do with history than modern popularity. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn opened Germany’s first public gymnastics ground in Berlin’s Hasenheide park in 1811.

Clubs built on his training method spread across German towns over the following decades. That movement became known as Turnverein.

The gymnastics federation grew out of that movement. It was formally organized in 1848.

Shooting Sports and Lifesaving Rank Among Germany’s Top 10 Club Sports

Shooting sports rank fifth among Germany’s sports federations. The Deutscher Schützenbund counts 1,349,758 club memberships.

That federation formed in 1861. The Schützenverein clubs it represents trace back to medieval-era town-defense traditions.
